Freedom Travel Insurance for Pre-Existing Conditions

* Overview
Freedom travel insurance is an insurance company that specializes in offering travel insurance that will protect you, your family and your belongings when you take a vacation. The company is based in Cambridge, UK and offers protection for British travelers taking trips around the world. Check your existing insurance policies before traveling to see if travel insurance makes sense for you.

* Misconceptions
Though some people already have homeowner’s insurance or medical insurance, their policies may not cover them while they are traveling. For example, some homeowner’s insurance policies may have a high deductible for baggage losses or a medical insurance policy may have higher deductibles–or even no coverage–outside of the network. In addition, the medical insurance may not cover certain preexisting conditions.

* Function
Freedom travel insurance can be used to fill in insurance gaps while you are on vacation. If you get sick while outside your medical insurance network, have a preexisting condition flare up while on your trip or even lose your baggage, your travel insurance policy will cover your losses. A standard Freedom insurance policy covers your medical bills, losses in case your trip is canceled or cut short, legal expenses, personal liability, your money and your baggage.

* Significance
Freedom will cover a wide range of preexisting medical conditions that other insurers may automatically deny coverage for as long as you disclose them when you are applying for the policy. According to Freedom Travel Insurance’s website, the company does not deny coverage for the following preexisting conditions: cancer, heart, respiratory, renal, bowel, liver, bladder, skin, bone, muscle, prostate, uterine, blood disorders, neurological, autoimmune, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, HIV, stroke, epilepsy, thyroid, thrombosis and disability. In fact, if your disorder is well managed, you may not have to pay a higher premium. (This and all information in this article is as of Feb. 2010; check the company’s website for the most updated information.)

* Considerations
The price of the insurance premium depends on a variety of factors including your age, current health and where you are traveling. Freedom Health Insurance offers some of the lowest premiums available for people traveling throughout Europe. The highest premiums are for people traveling to the Caribbean, Canada or the United States. Your premium will also go up as the length of your trip increases. Finally, the coverage options you select will affect your premium. For example, if your homeowner’s insurance policy protects your baggage with no deductible, you can opt out of baggage-insurance coverage, which will reduce your cost.
*
Time Frame
You can purchase travel insurance from Freedom as far as 183 days in advance of your trip. The advantage of purchasing the insurance well ahead of the departure date is that your coverage begins immediately, so if you have to cancel your trip for medical reasons, you will be covered. Once you have purchased your insurance coverage, you can cancel within 14 days.
